My Story

I’m Kathy Nielsen, the yarn gal behind Expressions in Yarn.  I have never considered myself to be a very creative or artistic person because I can barely draw a stick person, can’t hold a tune nor play an instrument. But, I can use a crochet hook and have found that it is possible to create almost anything out of yarn from the very practical and ever popular dishcloths to the truly outrageous, like cat sofas!  I’ve also learned that following a pattern to make something is much like following a recipe in cooking.  Sometimes things just don’t turn out even when you follow the directions. Sometimes you have to adapt and be creative to make it work. This is how I discovered that I am creative and can express my creativity through yarn....hence the name of my business.  

I first learned to crochet decades ago...as in the early 1980's while still single and working my first full-time job.  As I entered marriage and parenthood, I set my hooks down for the most part.   In late 2018, I was fortunate to retire early and soon thereafter, picked up my hooks, visited the yarn stores and away I went and haven't looked back.  I've always heard that one should pursue their passion after their career and I believe I have.  Now, I am excited to share it with all of you!
